Pet Orthopedic Surgery

At Alton Animal Clinic & Rehabilitation Center, we provide orthopedic surgical care for dogs and cats with conditions affecting the bones, joints, ligaments, and other parts of the musculoskeletal system. Our team is committed to providing compassionate, comprehensive care—from diagnosis and surgery through recovery and rehabilitation.

Orthopedic surgery may be recommended to repair an injury, stabilize a joint, relieve pain, or restore mobility.

Some of the orthopedic procedures we offer include:

  • TPLO Surgery (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) – A commonly performed surgical treatment for cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries in dogs. TPLO surgery stabilizes the knee and can help patients return to comfortable, active movement.
  • Patellar Luxation Repair – Surgical correction of a luxating patella, or kneecap that slips out of its normal position, helping improve knee stability, mobility, and comfort.
  • Fracture Repair – Surgical stabilization of certain broken bones to promote proper healing and help restore normal function.
  • Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) – A procedure that removes the damaged femoral head to relieve pain and improve mobility in pets with certain hip conditions or injuries.
  • Amputations – Surgical removal of a limb or portion of a limb when necessary due to severe injury, disease, cancer, or other conditions where amputation may provide improved comfort and quality of life.

Following orthopedic surgery, rehabilitation and a carefully managed recovery are important parts of helping your pet regain strength, flexibility, balance, and mobility. Our team can work with you to develop an appropriate recovery plan based on your pet’s individual needs.

Whether your pet needs TPLO surgery, patellar luxation repair, fracture repair, FHO, or an amputation, our goal is to provide thoughtful surgical care and help your pet return to a comfortable, active life.

Orthopedic Surgery Recovery Expectations

Recovery after orthopedic surgery varies depending on the procedure, your pet’s condition, age, activity level, and overall health. Following your pet’s post-operative instructions carefully can help support healing and reduce the risk of complications.

Depending on the surgery, recovery may include:

  • Restricted activity and controlled exercise during the initial healing period
  • Keeping your pet from running, jumping, or using stairs as directed
  • Administering prescribed pain medications and other medications
  • Monitoring the incision for swelling, redness, discharge, or other changes
  • Follow-up examinations to monitor healing and progress
  • Rehabilitation exercises or other physical therapy when recommended
  • Gradually increasing activity as your pet regains strength and mobility

Some orthopedic procedures require several weeks of restricted activity and a gradual return to normal exercise. Your veterinary team will provide specific recovery instructions based on the procedure performed and your pet’s individual needs.
